Index to the Present
The index is a structure that appears throughout my work. In this 1,800-line conceptual poetry installation, text forms a low horizon around the entire perimeter of the large gallery space. It serves as an appendix to the weavings, prints, and collages above. Titled 'Index to the Present,' the poem is a list of allusions to current events as well as private experiences. I use the rules of alphabetical order to introduce chaos, to blur categories. The personal gets shuffled into the collective. The result is surprising and often humorous. Cross references command the reader to literally cross the room to “see also” an earlier or later part of the alphabet.
